Research Interests :
Professor Subho Roy received both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Anthropology from the University of Calcutta. Later, he joined the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata as a UGC (JRF) to pursue his Doctoral research and was awarded Ph.D. Degree from the University of Calcutta. He has served Allahabad University and later joined the University of Calcutta and became a Professor in the year 2015. Presently he is a Professor (on deputation) in Biological Anthropology, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.
His research is mostly focused in understanding health of a population from its biocultural perspective; precisely how social and cultural factors shape the health status of a population. Research domains: Reproductive health, Ecology and Health, Anthropological Demography
Professor Roy has published more than 100 articles/book chapters in national and international journals/volumes like PLoS ONE, The Lancet, American Journal of Human Biology, Annals of Human Biology, Journal of Biosocial Sciences, Climacterics, Routledge Handbook of Anthropology and Reproduction, Journal of Women and Health, Journal of Women and Aging, Human Biology, Human Fertility, Anthropological Review, Singapore Medical Journal, Journal of the Indian Anthropological Society, Journal of Anthropological Survey of India and so on. He has been invited as a ‘Resource Person’ for a number of Refresher/Orientation course, outreach and training programmes and workshops; as ‘Invited Speaker’ in a number of seminars and conferences; as ‘Visiting Fellow’ a number of Indian universities. He has been serving as external member of course advisory and research advisory committees for a number of Indian universities. He is presently the ‘Managing Editor’ of Journal of the Indian Anthropological Society and Member Secretary of the Indian National confederation and Academy of Anthropologists.
Professor Roy acted as the Coordinator for the paper Physical/Biological Anthropology for national programme on ‘e PG Pathshala, A Gateway to All Post Graduate Courses under National Mission on Education through Information and Communication and Technology (NMEICT),Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. He is presently the Chairman of Institutional Human Ethics Committee of Anthropological Survey of India and Nagaland University. Professor Roy is presently a Government nominated member of the Rashtrya Manav Sanghralaya Samiti (2020-2025), Ministry of Culture, Government of India. He has been elected as the Sectional President of the Anthropology and Behavioural Science Section, of the 104th session of the Indian Science Congress Association.
